Post-Concussion Syndrome Vision Rehabilitation in Ajax, Ontario.

Whether from a car accident, or sports incident, concussions can exhibit many different symptoms. More than 80% of traumatic brain injuries (including concussions) cause some form of visual dysfunction. In many cases, visual symptoms that occur due to a concussion resolve on their own within 1-2 weeks as the brain recovers from the injury. However, in some cases the visual effects linger and require additional treatment to resolve.

Post-traumatic vision syndrome (PTVS) is the clinical diagnosis of these lasting effects. Some common symptoms of PTVS include, but are not limited to:

  • Double Vision
  • Light Sensitivity
  • Eye Strain / Headaches
  • Blurred Vision
  • Dizziness / Nausea
  • Difficulty Tracking / Moving Eyes
  • Overactive or Reduced Peripheral Vision
  • Discomfort with Certain Viewing Angles
  • Reduced Concentration for Visual Tasks
  • Reduced Depth-Perception
  • Difficulty with Driving
  • Difficulty with Reading / Screen Use
  • Discomfort with Busy / Crowded Areas
  • Reduced Memory for Visual Information

Treatment for these symptoms may include specialty glasses and/or optometric vision rehabilitation.

What is Vision Rehabilitation?

Vision rehabilitation (also known as post-concussion vision therapy) is a program of activities using specialized tools and equipment designed to improve visual skills that have been impacted after a concussion. The goal is to help the brain and eyes recover their connection, so completing tasks that rely on vision becomes more comfortable. It is based on the concept of neuroplasticity, which is the ability of the brain to rewire itself as it learns.

Vision rehabilitation is led by a vision therapist under the supervision of an optometrist specifically trained in vision therapy. Treatment differs from person to person, as our vision rehabilitation program is individualized to each patient to meet their specific vision needs.

Is Post-Concussion Vision Therapy Right for Me?

If you are experiencing visual discomfort after a concussion, you can either contact us directly to schedule a post-concussion vision assessment or obtain a referral from your concussion care team. Assessments will be scheduled with Dr. Seema Koria, who specializes in post-concussion vision care and is a registered HCAI (Health Claims for Auto Insurance) provider.

This assessment will test your visual system’s ‘hardware’ to better understand how your eyes physically respond to visual information as well as the visual system’s ‘software’, or how well the brain understands and uses the information collected by the eyes. To limit your discomfort and for most accuracy, the assessment may be divided into 2 or 3 visits ranging from 1 to 2 hours each. Results and treatment options (including specialty glasses, vision rehabilitation, etc.) will be reviewed with you following this assessment.

Once you have made the decision to proceed with vision rehabilitation, we will develop a personalized treatment plan targeting your specific needs and begin your therapy program!
