An examination will determine if your visual system is healthy and functional; whether the eye muscles are working and balanced so that the eyes work together; whether both eyes work equally well, and whether the focus is perfect or just good enough. A full annual examination is recommended for:

  • Children, because their eyes can change rapidly.
  • Seniors, since the risk of developing sight-threatening physical problems increases with age.
  • A person with a known eye or vision problem.

We recommend a bi-annual examination for anyone who has healthy eyes and no apparent visual problems. Why? Because vision is such a subjective thing — how is one to know if it is as good as it should be, or could be? There are some eye conditions that don’t have symptoms until the advanced stages. The only way to detect and treat them before there’s permanent vision loss is to have a regular examination. You get one set of eyes for life.

Your examination, which will last 30 to 60 minutes, may reveal that you have a refractive error that can be corrected in a variety of ways; a result that requires further testing; a physical problem that requires a referral to a medical practitioner; or a muscle imbalance that requires prismatic specs and/or exercises. Headaches and much eye fatigue are often the result of imbalances in the eye muscles. Some children have reading problems because the eyes won’t converge and focus on a book properly. Many people have minor focussing errors that don’t require the regular use of spectacles, but may want to know that the option to see better does exist. Many people wear specs just for night driving, an evening at the theatre, or to work on a motorcycle in a poorly-lit garage!

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How much is an eye exam in Ontario?

    • Fees for eye exams vary dramatically from provider to provider. But so too does the quality of care. At Ajax Eye Care, we pride ourselves in providing comprehensive eye exams to all of our patients using the latest technologies and a large team of highly trained staff. Fees in Ontario can range from $80 to >$300 for eye exams.

2. Does OHIP cover eye exams?

    • OHIP covers the basic portion of eye exams for certain groups of patients in Ontario. Coverage generally includes:

      • Children and youth 19 and under: one comprehensive eye exam every 12 months

      • Seniors 65 and older: one exam every 18 months (or more often if medically required)

      • Adults with specific eye-related medical conditions such as diabetes, glaucoma, or retinal disease

Most adults aged 20–64 without these conditions are not covered and may pay privately or through insurance benefits. It is worth noting that OHIP continues to lag when covering new technologies, and therefore, advanced retinal imaging and other technologies are not covered by OHIP.

3. How long does an eye exam take?

    • A comprehensive eye exam typically takes about 30 to 45 minutes. During the appointment your optometrist will check your vision, evaluate eye health, and update your glasses or contact lens prescription if needed.

4. Do I need an eye exam if my vision seems fine?

    • Yes. Many eye diseases develop without noticeable symptoms in the early stages. Regular eye exams help detect conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease before they affect your vision.

5. At what age should a child have their first eye exam?

    • Optometrists generally recommend a child’s first eye exam around 6 months of age, another exam between ages 2 and 5, and yearly exams once they start school to monitor vision development.

6. Can you update my contact lens prescription?

    • Yes. Contact lens prescriptions must be updated through a contact lens exam and fitting, which checks both your vision and the health of your eyes while wearing lenses. This ensures your lenses are comfortable and safe to wear.

7. What should I bring to my appointment?

    • For your eye exam, please bring:

      • Your OHIP card (if applicable)

      • Current glasses or contact lenses

      • A list of medications or medical conditions

      • Your vision insurance information, if you have benefits

This helps your optometrist provide the most accurate assessment.

8. Do you offer same-day appointments for urgent issues?

    • Many clinics offer same-day or urgent eye appointments when possible for issues such as eye infections, flashes and floaters, sudden vision changes, or eye injuries. If you are experiencing urgent symptoms, contact the clinic as soon as possible.
